Tacklebox - The target rounds

A round is a set number of arrows shot at set distances. There are different rounds for imperial and metric outdoor, and indoor. Some can take all day to shoot, others just an hour or less.

Usually you shoot your arrows in sixes, as two sets of three. That is, you shoot three arrows, step back whilst your partner shoots their first three arrows, and then shoot your second three. Then your partner shoots their second three arrows. When everyone has shot their six arrows, you all walk to the target (after waiting for the all clear) to score and collect your arrows.

The number of arrows to be shot in a round is usually given in dozens, and where more than one distance makes up a round, the furthest distance is shot first. For example, when shooting a Western round, you will shoot 4 dozen arrows at 60 yards, and then 4 dozen at 50 yards.

Target faces outdoors are nearly always the large 122cm face, although some FITA rounds use the smaller 80cm face at shorter distances. When shooting inside, you will be most likely to see the 60cm face (a smaller version of the 122cm face), although there are some special faces that you may see on some rounds. The target face for a Worcester round, for instance, is black with a white centre spot and is scored 5, 4, 3, etc. If you are shooting a round you have never shot before and you are not sure how to score, just ask!

The tables below show most of the rounds you may come across. The numbers in the boxes on the right are the number of dozen arrows shot at that distance.
