The Black Pear has been a symbol of the archers of Worcestershire for many hundreds of years. It is said that the banners of the Worcestershire Bowmen at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 bore a pear tree and that they even had with them quantities of Black Pears which they had brought from England as part of their food provisions. It is likely that this was because of the long-lasting properties of the Black Pear, although legend has it that the bowmen used some of the hard fruits as missiles to throw at the enemy!
